An open letter to President Obama and Congress

Most of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants, and many immigrants are excellent workers and students. However, adding 3 million people a year to the U.S. population, mostly due to immigration-related increases, will exacerbate unemployment, healthcare costs, budget deficits and many other issues because newcomers, both U.S. and foreign-born, consume energy, need jobs, health care, education and many other social services.

For the sake of U.S.-born citizens and legal immigrants of diverse backgrounds, we urge you to:

1. Enact an immigration moratorium, limiting immigration only to the spouse and children under 18 of U.S. citizens and to extraordinarily-qualified immigrants so that we can first improve life for law-abiding U.S.-born citizens and legal immigrants already here.

2. Enforce our existing immigration laws across the board, as strictly as Mexico does, so that we can encourage our able-bodied adult welfare recipients, non-violent prisoners, and unemployed workers to fill positions currently held by illegal migrants.

3. End automatic citizenship to children born here of illegal migrants.

4. Require that formal sponsors of immigrants be billed for all the welfare costs given to their relatives they sponsored for immigration.
